Ms. Skjegstad
Mrs. Skjegstad First Grade Teacher
First Grade is a year of discoveries in which children learn about God as the Creator of our Universe, and, as His children, their place in it and the gifts he has given them. With Christ as our example, the students are taught to be loving and caring towards others, and sensitive to the needs of those around them.
Psalms 143:10 Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. May your gracious Spirit lead me forward on a firm footing.
Children are a gift from God. God has not created any two children alike; therefore, each child has special gifts, needs & learning styles. My desire as a teacher is to motivate, encourage and provide meaningful, hands-on learning experiences where all children with their individual learning style have the opportunity to succeed.
First Grade is a year in which a solid foundation for future learning is built. My focus is to give them a strong foundation in reading, for with the confidence to read they will succeed. Our reading curriculum is phonics based with reading groups, and phonic lessons daily. Spelling lessons are also phonics based with weekly tests.
A foundation for Math is taught through hands-on activities in adding & subtracting fact families, counting money, telling time, measuring, place value, counting by 2’s, 5’s, 10’s, 25’s, & 50’s and an introduction to fractions.
I’ve taught here at Calvary Christian for 19 years, aiding for 6 years and teaching for almost 13. My Lord continues to amaze me as he is faithful to fulfill his promise to me and uses me as his vessel to teach these precious First Graders. I look forward with great anticipation as I wait to see what the Lord has in store for each New Year!
Isaiah 41:10 Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.
